BLACK WOMEN IN JAZZ ORAL HISTORY PROJECT

In the summer of 2022, I launched the Black Women in Jazz Oral History Project as a way to foster new research and creative work based on a more expansive set of sources. Too often, the history has emphasized male icons while erasing the women who have labored as collaborators and supporters. A major goal of the project is redefining how we think about community, labor, and artistic production in jazz. The project intentionally includes patrons, wives/partners of jazz musicians, managers, poets, writers, workers at jazz clubs, and other less recognized individuals. At present, I have conducted several interviews and am in the process of building a small team of community members, artists, and researchers to conduct interviews and to envision the long-term potential of the project. Please visit this page for updates on the project. If you are interested in joining the team, please get in touch by filling out the form on my "contact" page.
